The Sea Serpent

—Prequel to The Ghost Ship

Above the rocks, the seagulls screeched.

Captain Pegleg and his buddy Jack were sitting on the deck near an island. They had just fought against a group of pirates and captured a lot of treasure from them.

Captain Pegleg stood up. He could barely see the sea waving up and down. The sea looked deep and terrible in the fog. Everything around them was fuzzy. Captain Pegleg took a deep breath. Then he decided to row to the other side of the island.

Jack lowered the heavy oar into the water. But the currents were so strong that the oar was ripped away from his hands. Jack fell backwards as the oar slipped into the sea.

“I lost my oar!” Jack yelled.

Captain Pegleg looked up as the rain started. A gush of seawater poured over the side of the ship! The dark sky flashed with lightning and shook with thunder. Captain Pegleg and Jack both tried to pull themselves up and get on their feet.

Another huge wave was coming right towards them. Captain Pegleg looked at the sea again. What he saw made him gasp.

Rising from the oncoming wave was a giant sea serpent! Its head rose higher and higher above the sea level. Its neck was as tall as a two-story building. Its scales were covered with slime.
Jack was frozen!   

“Go away!” shouted Captain Pegleg. But the serpent was still approaching the ship. Captain Pegleg and Jack both ducked.

The giant animal opened its mouth, its teeth sharp and shiny. It bent forward when Captain Pegleg whipped out a sword and thrust it at the serpent in a flash.

“Sssslow down! I mean no harm.” hissed the serpent.

“Get us ashore before the ship sinks!” Captain Pegleg yelled as the serpent writhed in pain. Then he felt the ghost ship moving forward. Captain Pegleg looked up. They were gliding over the giant waves. He turned. The great serpent was pressing its long neck against the back of the ship, pushing it towards the shore.

As the serpent pushed them, the wind grew calmer. The cloud lifted and the water glittered in the sunlight.

The rocky shore became closer. Captain Pegleg could see the land and trees on shore.

“Hurry up!” Captain Pegleg called to the serpent monster.

The serpent gave the ghost ship one last push. The ghost ship swooshed onto the ground near the shore.

The great serpent was rearing its long neck into the air. Its scale glittered pink and green in the sunlight.

“Bye!” shouted Captain Pegleg. “Thanks a lot!”

The monster seemed to nod at him. Then it dove into the sea and disappeared.
