Frankenstein
The book aroused my interest at the very beginning. I was puzzled about the story. I could hardly imagine what had happened to Dr. Frankenstein. Why did he appear in the North Pole? How did he get there? What made him so weak and helpless? The strange figure stirred my curiosity once he turned up.
The story started when Dr. Frankenstein was rescued from an ice flow by Captain Walton. After that he began to tell his miserable experiences. He described his childhood as a paradise and remembered every second he had spent with his parents and the girl he loved. All of them were warm and kind. It’s hard to believe such a happy family had been totally destroyed by himself. There must be something hard to say hidden deep in his soul.
The story continued. Frankenstein pulled his thoughts back to the time he spent in college, where he threw himself into his studies of science. Curiosity urged him to put an amazing idea into practice and make a living being out of parts of dead bodies. Finally he succeeded. A creature was built and brought into life. It might be a great success in academic research, but it would be terrible in reality. The monster that came into being would be the chief offender and brought Frankenstein’s family a great calamity.
The monster was miserable as well. People’s cruelty and hatred made him ruthless instead of being kind. He tried to hide his murderous thoughts but failed at last. Dr. Frankenstein and his family became victims of the monster’s vengeance. Nevertheless, I could understand the monster’s malice towards everyone and his curses upon all humanity. No one could bear that all the people around took him as a monster. He was looking forward to a fair life, but the reality was greatly different from what he had expected.
When the monster lost the final hope for his own happiness, the ill-fortune fell on Dr. Frankenstein and his innocent family members. After everyone’s death, the story ends with Frankenstein’s dying of exhaustion after a long hunt for the monster and the monster’s final repentance.
I spent about two weeks reading the novel and was deeply moved by the characters. The majority may have pity on Dr. Frankenstein, but I actually found the monster more miserable. His creator hated and abandoned him; he was helpless and alone. No one gave him a hand when he was in trouble, nor did they regard him as a human! Maybe the author wanted to show us how terrible a society without any love or help was, and to give a warning to the selfish and cold-blooded people that the tragedy of Dr. Frankenstein will one day happen in their own life!
