Book Report on White Fang

作者:行知中学高一(四)班 常珊珊

White Fang, along with The Call of the Wild and The Sea-Wolf, is one of Jack London's three best known novels of men and animals against the environment, and survival against hardships in the early twentieth century. In White Fang, the author narrates vigorous stories of a wolf-dog named White Fang, from his birth to struggling for survival, from an orphan to the invincible, from his rebellion to loyalty.

When reading the novel, we can easily find that his work embraced the concepts of Darwinism - the natural selection and the survival of the fittest. At the beginning of the novel, I was deeply shocked in its exploration of the laws of nature. The wild was cruel and only the toughest could survive. White Fang gained his confidence and developed into a fearless, brave wolf-dog in killing his rivals and fighting for meat. He realized that the law of life is “eat or to be eaten”.

However, it is the cruelty of the world that makes love more valuable and touching. What fascinates me most in White Fang is not the law of nature but the fact that love is the power that nothing else can reach.

The most impressive plot of the book to me is when White Fang bit Matt, the person who saved him from the cruel Beauty Smith. Matt showed great love and patience to White Fang. As a saying goes, love can arouse love, which is also true to animals. White Fang felt the true love from Matt at last. With Matt’s care and love, he gradually knew the world, understood what true love means. They became the best friend forever. So, when Matt had to leave, White Fang didn’t scruple to hurt his eyes escaping from the house to meet Matt.

The story touched me deeply, for the tenacious vitality of White Fang, as well as for the sincere friendship between Matt and White Fang. From the heartfelt love, I learned that love is powerful - it can arouse love and heal all the pains.

The power of love is supportive and unconquerable. It is true in our real life too. For example, when the earthquake happened in Wenchuanall the Chinese made great efforts to help the victims. It was the true love from the volunteers and the warm-hearted people that helped the suffered gain strength to build a new home. Love makes the world go around! So, why not give our love, and make our world a warmer place to live in!

Book report on Gulliver’s Travels

作者:行知中学高一(四)班 蒋彤

Though the contents in the book Gulliver’s Travels are about some fantastic illusions, if we read carefully, we can find that in the book, the author expressed his life philosophy and portrayed an ideal world in the stories. He exposed the dark aspects in British society and also placed great hopes on those rulers.

In the novel, Captain, as the narrator, told us his fantastic experience during his travelling in different countries of the fairy-tale world. The character of Gulliver is very complex, who touched the exploration of human beings. With the undulating plots, and vivid imagination, the author expressed his contradictory feeling about human nature. Take the flying island of Laputa for example, where absolute monarchy dominates people. People who don’t pay taxes will be exploited rain and sun, or even to be hit by the falling stones. Such unreasonable and unfair phenomena, to a great degree, were criticised to the dark side of real society.

Besides the rich and vivid imagination, I also enjoy the numerous wise wonderful sentences in the book, which have entertained me and nourished my mind. There are wisdom, truth, kindness and beauty in them. For example, “Those who repay injury with kindness should be public enemy of human beings.” “Blindness may increase your courage, for you can’t see any danger.” To name just a few, I can’t help admiring the author’s deep insight to life and society.

To sum up, as a reader, I have been infatuated with the vivid description and artistic charm of the book. The author created a varied and colorful fantasy world by magical imagination and severe criticism, but the illusion and reality are in perfect harmony, in which we may feel it reasonable and thought-provoking.

Book Report on Black Beauty

作者:行知中学高一(四)班 李馨

I have read the novel Black Beauty recently. This is a tale that is told from the perspective of a horse, about how humans are mistreating animals. Black Beauty is a beautiful, meek and smart horse. He lived in a noble family from his childhood. His first master loved him very much and took good care of him. However, happy days did not last long; the hostess of the family suffered from severe illness. With his help, she narrowly escaped from death. But she had to leave for a warmer place so the master had to sell him. From then on, he was sold many times and moved from place to place, enduring countless hardships. He met with a variety of people and suffered a lot until finally he had a good home. It can be said that Black Beauty experienced the sweet and the bitter of life. With his fortitude, loyalty and kindheartedness, he fortunately ended the sufferings and lived a peaceful life.

As we all know, animals are always our friends. But through reading the book, I saw a lot about their sufferings and miserable life, which led to my deep thinking. As human beings, what kind of quality should we have? How should we treat the animal friends? Our indifference and contemptuous attitude to animals is our sorrow! We, the human beings should cherish animals instead of maltreating them for our own profits. Animals also have feelings; they give us the happiness in daily life. We should respect their life and treat them just as a person. In that way, we will get good faith in return and make the earth a harmonious common home for all of us.

Book Report on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

作者:行知中学高一(四)班 左持恒

The novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a marvelous science fiction written by Jules Verne. The story tells of the adventures of three men---Professor Aronnax, his assistant Conseil, and Ned,a harpooner, who were held captive at sea by Captain Nemo on the submarine Nautilus.

Professor Aronnax, Conseil and Ned fell into the sea when they tried to catch the “sea monster”. Surprisingly, they found that the “sea monster” was none other than an advanced man-made submarine. The adventures they underwent under sea, from fighting against octopus to walking in the water, from being chased by savages on an island to escaping in a maelstrom, are all exciting, vivid and breathtaking.

The author creates only 4 main characters in the novel, which is quite rare in such a long novel. Professor Aronnax is a person full of curiosity. He has a strong desire to explore the sea life. Conseil is a humorous but timid assistant, who is always loyal to Aronnax. The harpooner Ned seems to be an impatient and restless person who is always ready to flee from the submarine. Without him, they couldn’t possibly make it.

However, the most interesting character to me is the mysterious Captain Nemo, who is cold and crazy, but kind by nature. He seemed to have hatred for the world and the conflicts in his heart were so great that he lived a seclusive life on the sea. He showed great sympathy for the weak and had a passion for equality. But he attacked and sunk the battleships which stood for the evil. He wanted to eliminate war by means of war, which is ridiculous. He once said he would never let them go out of the submarine, but he set them free so that the three prisoners made their bid for freedom in a maelstrom before the Nautilus disappeared unknown.

Jules Verne gives us a fascinating glimpse into sufferings and conflicts of modern man. From my point of view, it is because of the background of miserable life people were living that arouses the author’s thought over equality and freedom. The four people of different personalities make up the story, and make it an excellent one.

Book Report on Robinson Crusoe

作者:行知中学高一(四)班 马佳琪

These days I have been reading Robinson Crusoe which is an amazing novel about adventure, written by Daniel Defoe. It tells us how Robinson, a British nobleman, succeeded in surviving on an isolated island alone. The novel is written in the form of a diary in the first person and makes all the adventures more real and more impressive.

I have learned a lot from the hero Robinson. He was brave, tough, resourceful and optimistic. Can you imagine that he should have lived on the island alone for almost 28 years? I can’t but admire his perseverance in spending months making a canoe, and in practicing pottery making until he gets it right. His resourcefulness in building a home from practically nothing is clearly remarkable! He is master of his own life! With do-it-yourself independence and through unremitting efforts, he not only owned his own houses and furniture, but also pastures, plantations, and even pets!

Despite the fact that Crusoe managed to live a quite comfortable life with years’ efforts, he was never interested in portraying himself as a hero. He was always ready to admit his feelings of fear or panic, as when he found the footprint on the beach. To me it was the true-to- life description that made me hold my breath when I read about the possible danger and fascinating adventure.

The most impressive part of the story to me is his dramatic meeting with Friday, a captured savage, who would have been eaten if Crusoe hadn’t saved him. Unbearable loneliness drove Crusoe crazy and he was in desperate need of someone to talk to. Crusoe trained him to speak English and live a more civilized life. Interestingly, Friday turned out to be a perfect friend and servant of him.

As the saying goes, “Adversity makes a man wise, not rich.” Tough life makes Robinson a real man. Therefore, in real life, we should try our best to overcome the difficulties we meet with and always remember “No pains, no gains.” When we learn to see more of the brighter side of life and less the darker side of life, we will learn more about life. He who has hope and courage has everything.
